![]() With our internet services being taxed to the limit both in our homes and in our neighborhoods, it's not uncommon for service to drop out unexpectedly. What happens if I get disconnected from the game? Will the game master pause the game and wait for my return?Ī. Please reach out if you will need assistance.ġ. ![]() The Game Academy administration is here and ready to help walk you through any aspect of the process and ensure you are able to connect as necessary. If you wait until your first session before setting up your environment, you will take time away from the game, and you will disrupt the ability to play for the rest of the group. We are asking that you take the time to create your Roll20 account, download the Discord client and set up an account, and test each out prior to the beginning of the first day of your program. Once you have an account, you will be able to receive the invitation to the specific Roll20 game/table related to any class for which you've registered, which we send to you prior to your class's first session. You can sign up for a free account on very easily. We use Roll20 as our main tabletop platform, and each player will need to have an account on the service in order to participate in our online programming. Because of this, and due to other benefits of Discord, we have our players adjust their Roll20 broadcast settings to turn off audio and video so that ensure this doesn’t conflict with Discord ![]() While Roll20 enables audio and video, it has proven to be unreliable. While it is not the same as a shared real tabletop, virtual tabletops such as Roll20 allow for a worthwhile experience with its own flavor and charm. Roll20 enables a shared virtual tabletop that simulates our gaming battle map for when such things are necessary, and it facilitates dice rolling, character sheet maintenance, and artifacts such as player handouts, music clips, and so much more that can enhance the shared experience. Roll20 is an online virtual tabletop, which allows for players to come together and share a visible representation of what is happening in the game from a top-down view. In the event Roll20 stops working for any participants, Discord enables us to share our screen and remove Roll20 from the participant equation altogether if necessary Discord also allows us to develop regular communication and community spaces, conveying a sense of membership and belonging to our participants as well as their families and support circles, and allowing them to connect and work together in our shared community of practice. We have created our own private server, and with the use of this hub, we can more readily communicate with and support our game masters while they are in session with their participants.ĭiscord is free for us to use (unlike Zoom), allows for a community to form around this shared server space, and it enables our ability to see and hear each other, which are necessary elements for successful and satisfying role-play. We are using Discord as our text, audio, and video communications hub for all of our group online programming. All of these cool online tools are intended to help and add to our own internal imaginations and our collaborative storytelling rather than take its place. However, it is important to remember that role-playing gameplay primarily takes place in our imaginations. We are using a private Discord server and the website to facilitate our online programs. Necessary Technology and its Role in our Programming This document is an attempt for us to pass on some of our experiences, give you a few troubleshooting tips, provide some insight into our procedures, and answer some frequently asked questions. ![]() We at The Game Academy have just endured a veritable crash course boot camp with the need to pivot to an online model, and as a consequence, we have gained some experience working on this platform. Further, the added complication of the increased volume of use due to all of us being at home, for both these apps/services and for our home internet and wifi connections as well can be a little tricky to diagnose and remedy without a little guidance. These apps and services, though quite reliable in their own context, have from time to time been known to fail in a few identifiable ways. Our online tabletop role-playing game programs are using a couple of well-known and well-tested web-based apps and services ( and Discord, specifically) to allow our gaming to maintain some of the feeling of being right there at the table with one another. ![]()
